Whinburgh

A small, wooden and golden plaque located in St. Mary’s Whinburgh commemorates four fallen soldiers in the First World War. Frederick Vincent and Herbert Whitehand are also included here due to their links with the village.

Alfred Gee

Alfred was born in 1886 near Cromer. He married Rhoda Bowman and had 2 children. He died in 1918 and is buried in France.

Harold E. Stimpson

Harold was born in 1893 in Australia. The family moved back to England and Harold enlisted. He died as a prisoner of war in 1916.

Closs E. Walpole

Closs was born in 1894 and enlisted in 1911. He was reported missing, presumed dead, 10 days after arriving in France in 1914.

George R. Jude

George was born in 1888. He had 10 siblings. He was one of the first men to enlist but died in July 1916.

Frederick Vincent

Frederick was born in 1879. He went on to marry Kathleen Barnard. A year later, he was killed in action and is buried in Iraq.

Herbert was born in 1889. He married Clarinda Thetford in 1913 and joined up in 1915. He was killed at the Somme in 1916.
